“Choosing a security company is a big and sometimes confusing decision,” says Robert Robb Hamic, President of Summit Security & Investigation.  Businesses should pay particular attention to several often overlooked details when choosing a reputable security firm,” he says.  The following is a list of items that security consumers should verify before making the decision to hire a firm.

• A state security “PPO” license is required in New Mexico. Verify it!      
• Worker’s Compensation insurance is required by NM law. Verify it!
• Each guard must be licensed by the state and trained to standards
• Verify that the security firm has Commercial General Liability insurance
• Verify vehicle insurance (if one is used at your location)   
• Verify a city business license and NM state Tax certificate 
• Get at least three client references and call them personally       
• Verify litigation history of the security firm as this may be a indication of past performance.  Unsuspecting security consumer businesses are often named as co-defendants in lawsuits.

Take bids from multiple security companies and compare/ check before making your choice!

There are a lot of good security companies in New Mexico and there are a lot of bad companies and owners.  I have seen many very professional guards working in the industry and this blog is filled with guards that are not professional or sometimes legal.  

A security consumer should take a few bids from reputable, licensed and reliable security companies before making a decision to go with one particular firm.  The prices for security are very similar but the services vary drastically.

Security consumers should verify not only the company's licensing with the STATE OF NEW MEXICO but the guard's licensing who works at your location.  All guards are required to have certain training and licensing by the state including FBI Background checks, fingerprinting and other checks.  Each guard will have an individual "guard card."

Insurance is important.  Make sure that bidding companies have appropriate limits of insurance in general liability, worker's compensation and vehicle insurance.  Many companies take short-cuts that endanger their clients.  Some common tricks are:  having insurance that is not intended for security companies, having out-of-date insurance and making their guards drive their personal vehicles on client's property.

Update on a few of New Mexico's worst security guards..

I wanted to give an updated as to the employees of the security industry that I have blogged about. Where are they and what are they doing now?

- Stuart Smith- (roving criminal)- he is working at the Circle K at Eubank and Candelaria NE. He was fired from another company for carrying a gun on duty with no authorization. He tells sources that he is going to start a security company. Great. Here we go again. I'm going to go get a big gulp and tell him that working illegally in security is a bad idea.

- Frank Maldonado- (felon who wanted a guard card) Bobby Rodriguez of Legit Security told me that he worked at Final Notice Investigation under George Walker. Rodriguez stated that Maldonaado was supervising Final Notice's security division. He also stated that Maldonado is a part owner in this firm.

- Gil Baca- still working at Legit and not in jail. Still impersonating people on the phone...

- Manny Sierra (Legit VP)- is rumored to be back at Legit, working.

- Joe Stidham- (Legit President)- still at Legit and working as Chief of Bosque Farms PD, although he isn't there much and may have abused his authority by allowing a bad person to wear a badge and do the work of a cop... BCSO Sheriff Darren White revoked "Chief Stidham's" Sheriff's Commission and all of BFPD's officers commissions in a vote of "no confidence."

- Steve Patterson- still running United Security.

- Derrek DeJesus (Mesa Detection Manger convicted of drug possession and newly arrested for Domestic Violence)- still working and licensed.

- Filberto Baca- still licensed and qualifying party of AART, Albuquerque's Armed response Team.

- "Bruno" (Avalanche Security Supervisor at Allsups)- was fired for bring a vicious dog to his security post.

- Yvette Pohl- (old owner of Five O Security) She went away and is still collecting a large child support payment despite making a larger income than her ex-spouse.

- Allen Johnson (flies the bird!) is still working in security with a "professional attitude."

- "2 Batons" (US Security Officer cuaght on tape) is still working at 7-11 and carrying 2 batons!

- Charles Adam Benns (Felon owner of Solid Steel Security) is still the owner and raking in tons of money, illegally.

- George Davis- his trial date is October 2 in Metro Court- make sure to show up in non-support of him.

- Michael Angelo Sanchez (Felon on probation) still works security.

There is a PI Board meeting October 2 and the complaint committee convenes to discuss all pending complaints including my 11 from last week. I have submitted supporting evidence, videos, audio and photos. Others have also submitted complaints.

I racked up a nice new death threat from "darkcanyon505" who reports to be an employee of Mesa Detection working security at the @ 25 Shopping Center on Jefferson and !-25. I assume that he was the driver of this car (CLICK FOR LINK). He makes a lot of threats of violence and he doesn't think that it is right for a person to film security guards (from public places) working. The investigation against this bonehead will continue despite his feeble threat. You will laugh when I show you this guy's picture.

This will be a big week for new evidence, documentation and big stories. I am working a ton of in-depth leads and surveillance directed at Albuquerque's worst security guards and companies.

Illegal Albuquerque/Rio Rancho security companies use www.craigslist.org to defraud New Mexico!

Craigslist.org is a very popular web site that advertises free listings including employment opportunities. Apparently, at least two unlicensed/illegal companies have used this site to offer unlicensed and illegal employment in New Mexico.

Armacorp Security, Inc and Madison Security are advertising jobs without being licensed as security companies. Check out the ads.

I have notified Steve Herrera, Board Administrator of the NM Private Investigator's Board but he probably won't do anything. He thanked me for the information and said he will look into it. I wonder what that means?

I guess the word is out on New Mexico being a haven for illegal and unlicensed security activity. Maybe the unlicensed and illegal security companies have a blog where they advertised New Mexico as a prime location to do business...

Mesa Detection investigation... This Albuquerque security company hires the wrong people.

The truth is hard to find. Sometimes you have to turn things upside down in order to figure out what is going on.

The next investigation features Mesa Detection Agency of Albuquerque New Mexico. Mesa has been around for some time and I have blogged a previous report about it being fined by the US Department of Labor of non-payment of overtime wages to its employees. I have been receiving a number of e-mails from their employees and i am concerned....

Marshall A. Minard came into my office and filled out an application. He listed Mesa Detection as his last employer. We conducted his background check prior to interviewing him (this is good practice) and noticed the small matter of a KIDNAPPING AND CRIMINAL SEXUAL PENETRATION arrest in 2008. We told him to get lost. There is no way I would hire a bonehead with an arrest record. I checked with Steve Herrera, Board Administrator, and he told me that Minard was not licensed and had his last license expired in June 2007.

I remembered that the PI Board recently denied the security guard license of Francisco Maldonado Jr. (Frank).

VI. Board Decision on Approval of Application for Francisco Maldonado Jr.

Mr. Herrera read a letter that was from Dr. George Walker of Final Notice Investigations in
support of Mr. Francisco Maldonado. Mr. Maldonado submitted an application for security
guard however had been convicted of a felony in 1992/1996. Mr. Maldonado was made aware
of the fact that his application was to be presented to the board at this meeting. Mr. Maldonado
did not attend the meeting to discuss the matter. Mr. Khalsa moved to deny licensure and Mr.
Wilson seconded the motion.

Some Mesa Detection employees remember Francisco (Frank) Maldonado working there for quite some time but there is no license for him and of course he is a convicted felon. The convictions were for SHOOTING FROM A MOVING VEHICLE (TWO SEPARATE CONVICTIONS) AGGRAVATED BATTERY, FIREARMS ENHANCEMENT AND CONSPIRACY. He sustained these convictions in 1992 and 1996 and still had the nerve to apply for a guard license.

Then there is the FELON is Ray L. Cole... Mesa submitted Mr. Cole's application on August 29, 2000 (the first time). Unfortunately, Mr. Cole became a CONVICTED FELON in 1981 for ARMED ROBBERY WITH A DEADLY WEAPON. Apparently, Cole worked for Mesa until September 8, 2001(unlicensed) but the Board was fully aware that Mesa had submitted his application. I wonder what they did to make sure this FELON wasn't working in the industry? Cole decided to work for Mesa again on July 20, 2005 and Mesa again submitted his application. He worked for them until they terminated his employment almost SIX MONTHS LATER on march 24, 2006. What did the PI Board do?

record (1986) Mr. Cassady made the following motion: to deny licensure due to
prior felony conviction, seconded by Mr. Wilson. Chair Jochem wanted to go
on record as voting in the negative. Motion passed.

What about Mesa's current Managers? Oops... Derrek DeJesus (pictured left) and on Mesa Detection's website under "management" was arrested for unlawful possession of Marijuana in 2001 and convicted. He was arrested June 20, 2008 for Assault against a Household Member and he is set for trial November 14, 2008. Hmmm...

I asked Steve Herrera is a drug conviction would prevent someone from getting a license (Mr. DeJesus is currently licensed) and this is what he said,

Possession of drugs would also violate plenty of parts in the Boards
Code of Ethics and Creed of Conduct. 16.48.1.8

61-27B-16 (B) 4 - Has not been convicted of a Felony or an offense
involving dishonesty, an offense involving an intentional violent act or
the illegal use or possession of a deadly weapon and has not been found
to have violated professional ethical standards.

But what else... Mesa is licensed and has Worker's Compensation insurance. The state has a great on-line search now. You can see if a company has a license and it lists employees that have been affiliated with it. I did some checking with Mesa's past employees and found the following:

Matthew J. Cooney- (Call Crimestoppers if you see him) 2 Arrest Warrants for INDECENT EXPOSURE!
William A Underwood- 2 Felony Arrests- 2000, 2002 for Aggravated Assault and Tampering with Evidence. These charges have since been deferred and then dismissed at the end of this man's probation. Mr. Underwood sent me an e-mail stating these facts on January 2, 2009.
Robert L. Payne- Convicted of Criminal Sexual Penetration of a Child (07), Burglary (01), Agg. Burglary and Receiving Stolen Property (04).
Stan Atwood- Convicted Felon- (85) Larceny, Receiving Stolen Property, (97) child Abuse, 10 misdemeanor arrests!
Chris Harriger- 29 misdemeanor arrests and plenty of convictions! He must be a slow learner...

Stan Atwood started working for Mesa on September 25, 2002 and received his license (#23207) a few months later. He continued work through July 20, 2004.

I'm sure that I'm not the only one to see a pattern with this evidence. The New Mexico Private Investigator's Board has seriously neglected these cases and endangered New Mexicans. I wonder how long it is going to take until the Board actually does something constructive like- getting these FELONS out of our industry. Is anyone getting worried yet? I am worried.

Albuquerque security is a "crapshoot." Some companies are licensed and in compliance but MANY are not. Be careful when choosing a security company!

If you are looking for an Albuquerque security company- watch out! This blog will provide you with sold proof of many people or businesses who have chosen the wrong company. Think about what is at stake. Potential injuries, lawsuits, violence or theft. You are hiring a security guard to protect your property and please don't take for granted the fact that the company is licensed, trained, the guard has a clean criminal record, has insurance to protect you (the consumer) or many other assumptions.

Many of us would just assume that if an Albuquerque security company has an ad in the Yellow Pages or a list ing in the Better Business Bureau that everything is OK.

Read this blog to find out why that is a big mistake. Unfortunately, the security industry in New Mexico is basically unregulated and un-enforced by RLD or the Private Investigator Board. Felons security company owners and employees operate openly and the PI Board and RLD knows about it. Since its inception, this blog has investigated and uncovered scores of violations, prompted the arrest of criminals in the New Mexico security industry, uncovered dozens of security companies that had no worker's compensation insurance, documented companies using forged documents such as insurance certificates, located felons working on-duty carrying loaded guns, located felons on PROBATION OR PAROLE working in security guard uniforms, etc, etc.

This blog has been recognized by law enforcement, radio, TV, Internet information sites and other blogs for the good that it has done. By my count, 7 arrests have been made by the "free" investigations provided by me and others helping me in our efforts to clean up the security industry. At least a dozen other people are under criminal investigation or have had the cases fully investigated and turned over to the District Attorney for presentment to Grand Jury in part, to the information this blog has provided. Since this blog's inception I have sent hundreds of e-mails to regulatory officials and at least a dozen packets of information. I have had many meetings providing all of this information to the powers that be.

There has not even been so much as one Cease and Desist letter sent to an illegal, unlicensed or out of compliance companies by NM RLD or the NM PI Board! Not even one! I learned this on a recent document request provided by NM RLD.

To my knowledge, Sheriff Darren White was the first law enforcement official to recognize the unlicensed security company problem as a stand alone issue. He directed the investigation of George Davis of National Security, which culminated in Davis' arrest and pending court case for unlicensed activity under the Private Investigator's Act. Our industry was truly grateful for his willingness to stand up for what was right when RLD and the PI Board (the entities supposed to regulate the industry) turned a blind eye on the problem.

New Mexico RLD has turned out to have no ability or motivation to clean up this industry. The NM Private Investigator's Board seems to be unaware of how bad this problem is and hasn't done anything constructive to enforce the NM security laws or put illegal or unlicensed companies out of business. As far as I can see, complaints still aren't being addressed other than by acknowledgement letters or e-mails. Personally, I feel like I have wasted a lot of time sending information to RLD when I could have directed my time in dealing more with law enforcement or the media to expose the problems and get the industry cleaned up.

It should be noted that the New Mexico Private Investigator's Board is made up of one citizen and private investigators, private patrol operators and a polygrapher. This is called for by law and NM statute. There was a vacancy in the Board due to Butch Cassidy of Pro-Force Security in Silver City resigning months ago. His position was filled by Mark Smith. This man was (by law) supposed to be a Private Investigator licensee and he had no experience in the industry. None. How he got appointed to the Board- we will never know. Steve Herrera, PI Board Administrator, pointed this out to me in a meeting that I had with him. Even he knew it was wrong. There continues to be a vacancy on the Board and a vacancy in enforcing our laws to the detriment of the public and employees of the security industry.

This problem is not going away. New Mexico government is going to have to step in at some point...
